Denise Payet is through to the last 64 of the Junior Girls’ Singles at the European Youth Championships, but Charlotte Bardsley is out despite a good display against the No 23 seed.

Payet overcame Sinai Itzhaki of Israel 4-1 to set up a tie against No 6 seed Andrea Pavlovic of Croatia tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Bardsley twice came from a game behind to level against the No 23 Marta Vukelic, also of Croatia, but her opponent took the next two games to complete victory. Bardsley earlier picked up a good victory over Luiza Popescu of host nation Romania in the preliminary round.

In the Junior Boys, Joe Clark went out 4-1 to Dimitrije Levajac of Serbia, having earlier come through his opening match against Stanislav Strogov of Estonia in six.

In the doubles tournaments, there were some good victories for pairs involving English athletes, including Payet & Owen Cathcart of Ireland, who reached the last 64 of the mixed. They faced third seeds Cristian Pletea (Romania) & Mariia Tailakova (Russia), who were too strong and won in three straight.

Payet & Sarah Mantz (GER) had a great win in the last 64 of the Junior Girls as they sunk the 11th seeds from Germany 3-1, while Bardsley and Klara Bardac (CRO) also won their last-64 tie. However, Clark & Mattias Mongiusti of San Marino exited at the same stage of the Junior Boys’ event.

In the Cadet Girls, Jasmin Wong & Ruby Chan won through their singles matches to reach the last 64, and advanced as a pair to the last 32 stage of the doubles. But Chan & Rafael Kong of Portugal went out of the mixed.
