Ben Piggott and Naphong Boonyaprapa reached the last 32 of the Italian Junior & Cadet Open, while Millie Rogove earned a last-64 place.

Boonyaprapa took out the 10th seed David Bessa of Portugal in a decider in the last 64, while Piggott went through in four against Djordje Petrovic of Serbia.

In the last 32, Piggott ran into eighth seed Chen Yuanyu of China, while Boonyaprapa met Hugo Deschamps of France. Both were beaten in three straight but can take a lot from their performances at this competition.

Cleveland player Piggott turned in two tremendous performances in the groups, first coming from 2-0 down to defeat Vit Kadlec of the Czech Republic 3-2 (7-11, 9-11, 11-5, 16-14, 11-4) and then beating Luca Bersan of Italy 3-1 in a close match (11-6, 12-14, 11-9, 12-10).

Boonyaprapa won one of his two group matches to go through to the main draw in second place behind Ireland’s Jonathan Mooney, but Thomas Rayner was edged out of a second-placed group finish in a 3-2 defeat by Mooney’s compatriot Dillon Byrne.

In the Cadet Girls’ Singles, Rogove went through to the knockout stage in second place in her group thanks to a 3-2 win over Hungary’s Kira Balogh, but Amy Marriott and Sienna Jetha went out.

Rogove won a marathon first game in her last-64 tie against ninth seed Malamatenia Papadimitriou of Greece, 17-15, but her opponent recovered to win 3-1.

Jetha was also competing in the Hopes Girls’ Singles and won her first match against a Slovenian opponent. She was then beaten by two Italian girls – the second defeat by 3-2 edging her out of a last-16 place.

All doubles combinations involving English players went out in the first round in both the boys’ and girls’ events.
