Liam Pitchford’s superb run at the Austrian Open was ended by Chinese great Xu Xin at the semi-final stage tonight.

Pitchford was beaten in four straight though he was far from outclassed as he lost 11-9, 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

Speaking after the match, he said: “It was a tough match tonight against Xu Xin. He was too good today, but overall it’s been a tournament full of positives and a lot I can take forward to the next tournaments.”

The English No 1 was the only non-Chinese player in the last four and can take huge positives from reaching the semi-final stage for the second World Tour event out of the last three, not least his defeat of Timo Boll in the quarters.
