Helshan Weerasinghe and Tom Jarvis performed above their seeding to reach the semi-finals of the Junior Boys’ Doubles at the Italian Cadet & Junior Open.

The pair, who are the National Junior Doubles champions, were seeded 9th but defeated the fourth seeds in the last 16 and the eighth seeds in the quarter-finals to earn a crack at the top seeds, Nolan Givone and Romain Ruiz.

That was where their run ended as the French pair proved too strong, winning in three straight.

Marcus Giles and his doubles partner Tom Hoffman of Luxembourg, ranked 40th, were beaten by 18th seeds Matteo Mutti and Carlo Rossi of the host nation in the last 64.

The English trio were also competing in the singles in Lignano, with Jarvis and Weerasinghe advancing to the knockout stages.

Both reach the last 32, where 15-year-old Jarvis was eliminated by fourth seed Aliaksandr Khanin of Belarus, while 11th seed Weerasinghe, 17, was upset by 29th ranked Spaniard Carlos Vedriel.

Giles was eliminated in the groups but won through a round of the consolation event before being knocked out in the last 32 by Croatia’s Marko Vidacek.

In the team event, England were eliminated from Group D despite beating Switzerland. Germany won the group to advance to the knockout stage.
