Alex Ramsden, Ethan Walsh and Denise Payet all reached the last 32 of the Cadet Singles at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open in Szombathely.

Ramsden, aged 15 and from Northampton, won his group with a 100% record and then saw off Radek Skala of the Czech Republic in the first knockout round.

Meanwhile, Stevenage player Walsh, 13, won two matches out of three in the group including, crucially, coming from 2-0 down to beat Switzerland’s Dorian Girod and then received a walkover in the first round.

It put both into the last 32, but they had tough tasks as Ramsden took on top seed Yukiya Uda of Japan and Walsh tackled Cristian Chirita of Romania, the fourth seed.

And although neither were outclassed – indeed, Ramsden took the first set – that was where their runs ended.

James Smith and Joe Clark were eliminated in the group stages, although both won one match.

Payet, aged 14, won two of her three qualifying group matches and then defeated Luiza Popescu of Romania in the first round. But she was defeated by sixth seed Pei-Ling Su of Taipei in four sets in the last 32.

Charlotte Bardsley and Mollie Patterson were both knocked out in the group stages.

In the Boys’ Doubles, Smith & Walsh were eliminated in the first round by a pair from the host nation, while Ramsden & Clark, having received a bye to the last 32, were unfortunate to come up against the second seeds, Aoto Asazu of Japan and France’s Bilal Hamache.

Payet & Bardsley were also knocked out in the first round, as were Patterson and her partner, Gabriela Stepanova of the Czech Republic.

In the team events, both England line-ups were eliminated in the group stages, although the boys did win one fixture, against a Belarus-Poland combination, in thrilling fashion as four of the five matches went the distance. And it was Walsh who sealed the overall victory, coming from 2-1 down and holding his nerve in protracted decider, which he took 17-15.
