Great Britain’s David Wetherill has found himself in the limelight once again by earning a nomination in the last 16 of the ESPN ESPY (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly) ‘Best Play’ Award category.

You won’t be surprised to learn that his nomination comes as a result of his ‘wondershot’ at the Paralympics.

His diving forehand shot past Poland’s Thomasz Kusiak has already been voted as the fourth greatest moment from the London 2012 Paralympic Games by the International Paralympic Committee, but now faces an even bigger challenge as he comes up against the ‘Best Plays’ in ESPN’s American-dominated line-up.

Wetherill is not only the only table tennis player in the line-up, but also the only disabled athlete in the last 16 – making his inclusion all the more impressive against a high-calibre field of athletes.

The competition works on a knockout basis with David up against Jadeveon Clowney’s ‘hit’ for South Carolina (American Football) in the first round. The play with the most votes goes through to the next round until a solitary winner is reached.

It’ll be tough work for the Brit who comes up against stars from basketball, baseball, American football and Ice Hockey among the nominations in a poll likely to be dominated by the American public voting.

That’s why your votes are needed!

Head to the ESPN ESPY awards page and click for ‘more categories’. On the bottom right-hand side will be the ‘Best Play’ category and there you will find David’s shot. Voting for the first round closes on July 8th.
