Vicky Coll was the winner of the Under 11 Girls’ event at the Waterside Open

Waterside Junior Open, July 2012

Five Oxford juniors travelled down to Southampton for the Waterside Open. Most successful was Vicky Coll, who gained her first ever outright tournament victory in the Under 11 Girls’ event, also finishing 3rd in the under 13s. Leo Long, who has joined the Thursday coaching group, played superbly to take the silver medal in Cadets and the bronze in Juniors. He has still not quite reached his 14th birthday and is an exceptional talent. Neither Josh Selby nor Ethan Ball produced anything to write home about, but Simon Price battled manfully throughout the day to take 5th place in Cadets and 6th in Juniors.

Vicky had another fine day at the Burton Uxbridge Junior Open Two Star. In Under 11 Girls she beat Nicole Scott (Lancs), Caitlin Hayes (Lancs) and Lucy Chen (Taiwan) without losing a game. But she had to be content with 3rd place after narrow defeats at the hands of Lydia John (Wales) and Katie Holt (Hants).

Junior boys Farren Seamon (Herts), Jimmy Yeung (Hants) and Leo Long.
