Wilson tops group in Hungary

Sam Wilson reached the main draw at the Hungarian Junior & Cadet Open, but there was no luck for Thomas Rayner or David Gofton.

Wilson topped his Junior Boys’ Singles group by winning all three matchs 3-0, though he was pushed by Tommaso Giovanetti of Italy, with the first game going to 19-17. it put Wilson into the round of 128, where he was defeated 4-1 by Ukraine’s Oleksandr Malov.

Gofton won one of his three group matches, beating Yaroslav Oleskevych of Ukraine in four, but defeats by Hungarian and Belgian opponents saw him go out. Rayner lost his three group matches, though he had a couple of close ones. He will play in the Cadet competitions later in the event.

Both pairs involving the English players went out in the first round of the Junior Boys’ Doubles. The three English players will compete together in the team competition on Friday.
