Please note - this news article was published more than one year ago. Some of the information contained may no longer be correct.

This month there are a selection of 12 photographs where some players and officials from different eras. Some are known whilst others are not. To conclude is a superb group shot taken at the 1977 World Championships in Birmingham in 1977.

I have had some responses to last month’s pictures which came from Margaret Fry’s cuttings book and these are itemised at the end.

If anyone is having a Christmas clearout and comes across any photographs, programmes or other memorabilia I would be delighted to receive them to add to Table Tennis England’s archives, either as a donation, long term loan or so the material can be scanned and returned and so preserved. As always I can be contacted on DianeK1414@hotmail.co.uk

I hope you have enjoyed looking at all the photos over the last year and I thank everyone who has contacted me and all who have provided information. First Friday’s Photos will be back next month on 6th January, the first Friday of 2017.

My best wishes to one and all for a good Christmas and a healthy and peaceful New Year.

Juniors waiting for a train to the Hook of Holland for a trip to Duisburg-Wedan to play in the West German Junior Invitation Tournament from 5th-11th July 1963. The tournament was originally meant to have been the European Junior Championships but the withdrawal of the Iron Curtain countries led to it being downgraded.
Back row: David Stanley, Margaret Fry (Girls’ Team Captain), Tony Robinson, Laurie Landry (Boys’ Team Captain), Christine Holes, Jackie Canham (now Jackie Billington).
Front row: Chester Barnes, Lesley Bell.
Lesley Bell (now Lesley Radford) was unbeaten in the tournament, and had been unbeaten by a junior on the international stage in the previous season. She was considered the finest junior female player in Europe at that time.

A group photo with Margaret on the third row, second right. Also in the picture are Lesley Bell, Christine Holes, Beverley Sayer, Brian Hill, Laurie Landry, Denis Neale, Mike Symonds and David Stanley who have all signed the photograph on the back. It is marked on the back Malente, January 1962.
The England Girls’ Team won the tournament beating Finland, Holland, Denmark, West Germany (twice) and Sweden. The Boys’ Team finished fourth. In the individual events Chester Barnes reached the Quarter-Finals in the Boys Singles. Christine Holes also reached the Quarter-Finals in the Girls Singles with Lesley Bell the winner.  In the Girls Doubles Lesley Bell and Jackie Canham were Semi-Finalists and the Mixed Doubles saw Chester Barnes and Lesley Bell also reach the Quarter-Final stage.
