David McBeath scored a notable win over world No 105 Eonrae Cho to top his qualifying group at the Swedish Open.

With both players having had a 4-0 win over Slovakia’s Ingemar Peter, it was a straight shootout for a place in the knockout stages and world rankings strongly favoured Cho, with McBeath having been ranked 308 before moving on to the inactive list.

But the Hampshire man made light of that difference, coming from 3-2 down to complete one of his biggest victories.

Sam Walker was on the wrong side of a 4-3 scoreline, going down to Denmark’s world No 245 Claus Nielsen. But with all three players in the group registering one victory, Walker still topped the group.

Tom Jarvis, Helshan Weerasinghe and Luke Savill were eliminated, losing out to higher-ranked opponents, although Jarvis picked up agood win over an Iranian ranked 60 places higher than him at 322.

Liam Pitchford is also competing in Stockholm where, as 20th seed, he goes straight into the later stages.
