Fire team blaze a trail to glory

A FireSportUK team were certainly on fire as they won a table tennis tournament in Germany.

The German Open International Fire Team Tournament featured 10 teams of Fire Service staff from the host nation plus three from the UK and one from the Netherlands.

Teams consisted of three players, with six singles matches and one doubles making up best-of-seven ties, starting in qualifying groups.

The UK squad was: Chris Beckley (team manager), Charlie Matthews (Scotland), Chris Elkin (England), Bob Adamson (England), Steve Bushell (England), Jane Bevan (England), Gary Thompson (England), Tim Chan (England).

Play was over two days and, after day one, three German Teams and the UK second team comprising Beckley, Bevan and Bushell made it to the semi-finals.

UK2 triumphed 4-3 over Germany9 in the semis in a closely fought match and marched on to secure the gold medal in the final with a resounding 4-1 win over Germany3.

The return leg of the annual international friendly will be held in London next year.
