Chelmsford & District: Young wins battle of aces

Daniel Young and Liam Squirrell – two of the stars of the M&G Investments Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League Championships last weekend – met in the division 1A of the Chelmsford & District Table Tennis League the week before.

And it was Young who came out on top and his hat-trick of wins included a 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-9) victory over Liam – Liam’s first defeat of the season. Liam hit back and he defeated Daniel’s dad Gary 3-1 (12-14, 11-4, 11-5, 11-9).

Charles Sweeny had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Steve Whiteley 3-2 (11-6, 1-11, 11-8, 8-11, 13-11). The match finished Rawreth 5 Danbury A 5.

Danbury A also beat Writtle A 7-3. Eric Green led the way with a hat-trick of wins whilst Matthew Brown made his mark with a fine 3-2 (10-12, 12-10, 11-7, 4- 11, 11-8) win over Daniel Young. Ryan Pitt made his presence felt with an excellent victory over Steve Whiteley – another of the “big-hitters” in the Chelmsford Closed Championships – 3-0 (11-7, 11-6, 11-8).

Second-placed Chelmsford A (Tulay Dundar / Eddy Ogbebor / Wal Bada) ran out 9-1 winners over Rawreth A. Newcomer Mark Rudland impressed here with a 3-1 (9-11, 11-7, 11-3, 11-9) win over Tulay Dundar. Leaders Maldon A (13 wins out of 14) had Trevor Lloyd and Alex Abbott undefeated as they beat Writtle A 7-3.

Galleywood A (Gary Brignall / James Hicks / Steve Kerns) lead the way in division 1B. Brignall has hit a rich vein of form and he was undefeated as his side beat Writtle B (9-1) and Liberal (6-4). Writtle B’s Phil Smith scored his side’s victory in their 9-1 defeat – his first ever success against Kerns (11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-9).

Brignall was on superb form against Liberal and his three wins were all of the highest order. He beat Adam Buxton 3-0 (12-10, 14-12, 12-10), Steve Pennell 3-1 (6-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-5) and he sealed the Galleywood victory in the last game with a 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-9) win over Andrew Huckson. Buxton came out on top 3-2 after a real rollercoaster ride against Kerns (11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 8-11, 16-14).

Chelmsford B edged their match 6-4 against Hatfield Peverel A. Robert Shrimpton led the way with a hat-trick. And it was ace defender Ian Whiteside who excelled as Danbury B drew 5-5 with Writtle B. Whiteside beat Gary Cattermole 3-0 (11-4, 11-7, 11-9), Lin Roff 3-1 (11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 11-3) and Phil Smith 3-1 (9-11, 11-4, 11-9, 11-9).

Promotion-chasing Maldon B turned in a strong performance in division two. Hamish Innes and Ciaran Whelan were both undefeated as they beat Danbury E 9-1. Ken Sheard beat Colin Napper 3-0 (11-9, 11-4, 11-6) for the losers.

The leaders OCs B won again – 7-3 against Writtle C. Kevin Worthington won his three singles and this included a 3-1 (11-7, 16-14, 7-11, 11-9) win over Gary Ward – the best of the Writtle players.

Chelmsford C also beat Writtle C – 8-2 this time. Wiktor Delimat and impressive newcomer Christian Bernardo were both undefeated.

It was honours shared between Hatfield Peverel B and Danbury C. Dave Fiddeman was unbeaten for Hatfield Peverel – just. He beat Dick Wyman 3-2 (11-8, 7-11, 6-11, 11-5, 13-11) and if that wasn‘t close enough he also defeated Tim Cramphorn in five (11-5, 9-11, 11-4, 13-15, 12-10).

The big shock in division three was the 10-0 defeat for second-placed Chelmsford D against Danbury G. From the first game when Mo Hardy beat Dave Parker 3-2 (11-6, 9-11, 3-11, 11-5, 11-9) it was Danbury G who were calling the shots and Peter Hance and Nicky Reece Ford both played their part in a superb Danbury G performance.

Leaders OCs D, 7-3 winners over OCs F, now have a 11-point lead over Chelmsford D. Gareth Joice led the way with a hat-trick which included a 3-2 (4-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 11-7) win over Ashton Parker – the best of the OCs F players.

Danbury H (with Allan Steel and Eamon Hall both staying undefeated) ran out 7-3 winners over Danbury F whilst Writtle D’s Trevor Collin, Dave Carter and David Mears all won twice in their 6-4 win over OCs E. Mears beat Richard Baxter 3-2 (12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 15-13) in the closest game of the night.

Maldon D only had two players against Writtle E but with Mervyn Perriman remaining undefeated they drew 5-5. Thomas Page – another player who made his mark at the M&G Investments Chelmsford Championships won twice but he missed out 3-2 against Dave Moles (6-11, 11-7, 4-11, 11-7, 1-11).

Danbury J made it 14 wins out of 14 in division four and after 14 matches they lead Writtle F by a massive 24 points. Rob Kneale was unbeaten in their 8-2 win over Highwood B. Frank Neill impressed for Highwood with a 3-2 (6-11, 11-5, 8-11, 11-9, 12-10) victory over Richard Allen.

Ian Hockley was also undefeated and his trio of wins enabled Writtle F to beat Chelmsford F 6-4. Hockley completed his hat-trick with a 3-1 (13-11, 5-11, 11-8, 11-7) win over Adi Kamma.

Chelmsford E ran out 8-2 winners over Danbury K. Jon Dyson and James Donald were both undefeated. The match between Galleywood B and a two man OCs G finished tied at 5-5. David Bishop was unbeaten for the Old Chelmsfordians team.

Chelmsford G climbed into second place in division five with a 9-1 win over Hatfield Peverel E. Ian Austin and Andy Swales both bagged hat-tricks. Sarah Austin won twice and this included a 3-2 (8-11, 11-8, 11-8, 8-11, 15-13) win over John Kuhl.

Maldon E also won 9-1, beating Hatfield Peverel D. Gary Eames and Denis Crapnell both won their three singles. Gary Simmonds was on target for the losers with a 3-2 (11-4, 11-8, 6-11, 10-12, 11-9) win over Kym Eames.

Hatfield Peverel D in turn hit back by beating Hatfield Peverel E 10-0. Richard Drozd, Andy Whiley and Andy Simmonds all stayed undefeated. The first match of the evening was the closest and Andy Whiley shaded it 3-2 against Phil West (11-6, 10- 12, 8-11, 11-7, 14-12).

Chelmsford J had Revox Matthews on top form as they beat Maldon E 8-2. Jacqui Smith and Takunda Nerutanga both won twice in a good all- round team performance. Nerutanga had to pull out all the stops to get the better of Rob Sach in five (11-9, 15-17, 11-4, 9-11, 11-8).

The leaders Danbury Dragons made it three wins out of three in CLICK Division 2A. Ewan Hynd and Sam Mortimer-Ford were both undefeated as they beat Chelmsford Jaguars 5-0 and in their reverse figure against the Chelmsford Jaguars they won 4-1. Sam Mortimer-Ford was again undefeated whilst Nyree Marsh was on target for the Jaguars with a 3-1 (11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-2) win over Jensen Davis. Chelmsford Cougars ran out 5-0 winners over Chelmsford Tigers. James Donald and Sudheep Kamma carried all before them.

Chelmsford Panthers were the big winners in CLICK division 2B. James Killeen and Malachi O’Leary were both undefeated as they beat Buttsbury Bats 5-0.

Three matches were decided 4-1. Danbury Demons (Jensen Davis and Elliot Gardiner) beat Buttsbury Bulldogs whilst West Maldon (Oliver Wylie and Noah Sage) beat OCs Lions and Chelmsford Rhinos (Dan Wise and Josh Bickles) defeated Butsbury Bears. Harry Hutt was on target for Buttsbury Bears with a last-gasp 3-2 (9-11, 11-9, 7-11, 11-8, 13-11) victory over Dan Wise.

OCs Lions were 3-2 winners over Buttsbury Badgers. Josh Peagood led the way with 3-0 wins over Ben Brown (11-5, 11- 9, 11-7) and Aiden Tucker (12-10, 11-6, 12-10). Chelmsford Leopards did well to beat Danbury Demons 3-2 – good going as neither Al Lane nor Dion Fernandes were able to beat Elliot Gardiner.

Buttsbury Bees did well to beat Chelmsford Panthers 4-1 in CLICK division 2C. They won the two five-setters as George Hagland beat Malachi O’Leary (8-11, 11-5, 12-10, 7-11, 11-9) whilst Hagland and Ollie Barrett beat O’Leary and Theo Griffiths in a very well contested doubles (12-10, 13-11, 8-11, 5-11, 11-7).

Callum Caldwell won his two singles as Danbury Griffins beat Buttsbury Bees 3-2 whilst Chelmsford Eagles (Charlie Donald and James Killeen) defeated Buttsbury Beavers 3-2. Danbury Griffins also beat Chelmsford Falcons 4-1. Adam Thirkettle won his two singles whilst Findley Bailey chipped in with a hard fought 3-1 (12-10, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10) win over Sam Lincoln.

Chelmsford Falcons had Olly Cheung and Alex King both undefeated as they beat Chelmsford Eagles 5-0. The doubles looked poised at 2-2 after Jixuan Li and Pragrak Gupta had squared the game. But it wasn‘t enough and Olly and Alex surged clear in the decider for a 3-2 (11-8, 11-4, 10-12, 10-12, 11-3) victory.
