The Ormesby 2 Star U17 Open Championship was held at the club on 21 December with Tudor Eftinca winning the U17 boys singles, with Omar Wasi the runner-up.

The match between two prize-winners, both from Yorkshire, was the highlight of the day when Eftinca recovered from 2-0 down to win at 14-12 in the decider. 

Eftinca also had a close match with Charlie Burnside, winning 11-7 in the fourth, and Wasi was taken to four games by both Charl Myburg and Monty Super.

The Under-15 boys’ singles was won by Adam Watson from Durham, who was unbeaten. His closest match was with the player who finished in second position, David Sherwood of Yorkshire, which he won by 14-12 in the fourth game. 

Sherwood finished in second position on a countback with Aaron Wong of Yorkshire, who finished in third place. In the match that decided the second place, Sherwood won in straight games.

The Under-15 girls’ winner was Dorian Cheung of the NETTS Club in Newcastle, who represents Durham and was the second seed. A decisive match was against Phoebe O’Brien of Scarborough, which Cheung won 11-9 in the deciding game. In second place was Ormesby’s Mindy Gao who also had narrow win against O’Brien, who finished third. Gao won by 11-9 in the decider.

In the Under-13 boys’ singles, the winner was Aaron Wong with Oscar Dixon second, both from Yorkshire. Wong won the match between the two award winners in straight games.  Dixon was taken very close by Jonti Barnes at 11-8 in the fifth.

The Under-13 girls produced a surprise when Mila Gao won the competition with a victory over Phoebe O’Brien 11-9 in the decider. O’Brien had another close match again Mindy, sister of Mila, and this time she won 11-9 in the fifth.
