Mollie Patterson had a fantastic weekend at the Preston Grand Prix, barely putting a foot wrong as she won three singles titles – the Under-21s and Band 1 as well as the blue riband Women’s Singles.

Patterson justified her top seeding as she won the Women’s Singles, recovering from losing the opening set in both semi-final and final.

The final saw her defeat second seed Hoi Ting Lam 3-1 (9-11, 13-11, 11-6, 11-4), while she had previously got past third seed Froydis Jorgensen in the semi-finals by a margin of 3-1 (10-12, 11-7, 11-5, 11-8)

Lam’s semi-final was against seventh seed Kate Roberts and she won it 3-0 (6, 8, 9). Roberts earlier defeated fifth seed Bethany O’Connell 11-7 in a decider in the quarters.

Men’s Singles

Top seed Grigory Vlasov duly took the Men’s Singles title, but needed five sets to get past surprise finalist Radoslav Kamberov, ranked No 11 in the competition.

Kamberov staged a fine comeback after losing the first two sets, but Vlasov finally got over the line in the decider for a 3-2 (11-5, 11-6, 6-11, 6-11, 11-7) victory.

Vlasov had faced up to young England prospect Toby Ellis in the semi-finals, coming through 3-0 (8, 3, 7) against a player ranked No 16, who was fresh from competing at the WTT Youth Contender event in Italy last week. Ellis had earlier overcome fellow England youngsters Adam Dennison and Rhys Davies – the latter in five in the quarter-finals.

In the bottom half of the draw, Kamberov defeated second seed and Crawley champion Sam Mabey in five in the semi-finals, finally getting through 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 11-5, 2-11, 11-4).

Under-21 Women’s Singles

In the Under-21 Women’s Singles, Patterson won the top prize with a 3-0 (11-5, 11-7, 11-7) victory over Rebecca Savage in the final. Patterson beat Bethany Ellis in three in the semi-finals, while Savage overcame Stefania Popa in four.

Under-21 Men’s Singles

Toby Ellis defeated his fellow England junior Adam Dennison 3-0 (15-13, 11-8, 11-7) to take the Under-21 Men’s Singles. Both sem-finals were done in four, Ellis overcoming Rhys Hetherton 12-10, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5 and Dennison defeating Rhys Davies 14-12, 6-11, 13-11, 11-9.

Veteran Singles

Grand Prix stalwart Rory Scott took the Veteran Singles, defeating Steve Brunskill 3-1 (8-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-3) in the final. Scott had been pushed in the semis, Shaun Ellis extending him to a decider before Scott won 3-2 (11-6, 10-12, 11-3, 6-11, 11-7). Brunskill beat Zoltan Kulics in four in the other semi-final.

Restricted Singles

Bogdan Postodur was victorious in the Restricted Singles, beating Ryan Fellows 3-0 (11-1, 11-8, 11-4) in the final. His semi-final was somewhat tougher as Graeme Barella pushed him to 16-14 in deciding fifth game. Fellows defeated Marcel Surdu in four in the other semi-final.

Banded events

Men’s Band 1

Ismaila Akindiya held off a determined Rhys Davies to prevail 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6). Both finalists came through their semi-finals in four – Davies against Sean Doherty and Akindiya against Adam Nutland.

Women’s Band 1

Mollie Patterson won the round-robin competition, dropping only one set in her four matches, against Jersey’s Hannah Silcock.

Bethany O’Connell was second, her crucial success being a 3-2 (6-11, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-9) victory over Hoi Ting Lam.

Men’s Band 2

Rhys Davies made up for Band 1 disappointment by defeating Sean Doherty in the final, but he had to come from behind to win it in five – the scoreline was 3-2 (7-11, 14-12, 5-11, 11-7, 11-6) in his favour. Dohery beat Robert Pelc in five in the semi-finals, while Davies got past Jacob Evans in four.

Women’s Band 2

Bethany O’Connell went one better than in Band 1, winning the top prize with four wins out of four. She needed four sets against both Hannah Silcock and Juliette Helfi – Jersey athlete Silcock winning her other three matches to claim second place.

Men’s Band 3

Nahom Goitom was the champion, beating Ioan-Alexandru Anghel 3-1 (7-11, 11-9, 11-2, 11-7) in the final. Goitom’s semi-final was very close as he finally overcame Adam Dennison 3-2 (12-14, 11-8, 9-11, 11-9, 11-9). Alexandru-Anghel defeated Jacob Evans in four in his last-four match.

Women’s Band 3

Juliette Helfi overcame Rebecca Savage 3-1 (11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 11-6) to claim the title. Helfi defeated Bethany Ellis in four in the semi-finals, while Savage needed three to see off Stefania Popa.

Men’s Band 4

Ryan Fellows beat Harri Docherty in four to take the Band 4 title – the scoreline was 13-11, 7-11, 11-3, 11-7.

Both semi-finals had been tight and were decided in five. Fellows came from 2-0 down to beat Michael Bree 3-2 (5-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 14-12), while Docherty defeated Victor Marquiori 3-2 (11-6, 33-1, 11-7, 14-16, 11-8).

Women’s band 4

Bethany Ellis was the champion, defeating Stefania Popa 3-1 (11-4, 11-8, 13-15, 11-4) in the final. Ellis beat BPTT athlete Fliss Pickard in four in the semi-finals, while Popa came through in three against Emily Flynn.

Men’s Band 5

The final went all the way to a fifth and it was James Vella Vidal who came out on top against Dai Lin, prevailing 3-2 (11-9, 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 11-8).

Both players also had five-setters in the semi-finals, Vella Vidal winning 3-2 (1-8, 11-7, 9-11, 5-11, 11-9) against David Sulkowski and Lin beating Joe Marlor 3-2 (11-8, 10-12, 5-11, 11-6, 11-8).

Men’s Band 6

The final was a carbon copy of Band 5, as James Vella Vidal overcame Dai Lin in five. The scoreline on this occasion was 17-15, 11-13, 5-11, 11-5, 12-10). The beaten semi-finalists were Sulkowski – again beaten by Vella Vidal, though this time in four – and Ibrahim Abdullah, who lost in three to Lin.

Player of the Weekend

The award went to Joseph Cooper, who had a fantastic run to the quarter-finals of the Men’s Singles.
