Ben Piggott & Felix Thomis prevented a University of Nottingham clean sweep at the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) Table Tennis Championships.

The competition was hosted by the University of Nottingham at the David Ross Sports Village and the home players were in top form as they won four of the five main titles and a host of minor medals.

But Sheffield Hallam pair Piggott & Thomis got in on the act as they won the Men’s Doubles, defeating home pair Robert Pelc & Harri Docherty in the final. Bronze medals went to Joe Sawyer & Shae Thakker, also of Sheffield Hallam, and Chun Wai Fung & Tianyi Yu of Imperial.

Other than that, it was University of Nottingham all the way, with Xinliang Sun and Jiaqi Meng taking the Men’s Singles and Women’s Singles respectively.

Sun beat Piggott in the final, with Thomis and Pelc taking bronzes having been defeated in the semi-finals.

Meng beat fellow UoN student Tin-Tin Ho in the women’s final, with bronzes going to Yat Poon, also of UoN, and Mollie Patterson of Nottingham Trent.

In the Women’s Doubles, Meng & Ho teamed up to take the gold, beating class-mates Poon & Jasmin Wong. The bronze medal-winning pairs were Anna Green & Mari Baldwin of Nottingham and Erin Green & Scarlett Anders of Newcastle.

The Mixed Doubles saw a clean sweep for Nottingham as Meng & Pelc took the title by beating Ho & Docherty in the final. Bronzes went to Poon & Sun and Anna Green & Tianyi Zhang.

The Men’s Plate was won by Will Saint (Cambridge), with Rowan Jones (Durham) taking silver and Nilay Balaji (Bristol) and Dan Hearne-Potton (Manchester) bronze.

The Women’s Plate gold medallist was Lauren McIndoe (Newcastle), who beat Gabriella Lee (Imperial) in the final. Bronzes went to Yao Shandong (Exeter) and Samadhi Udamulla (Leeds).
