Kacper Piwowar reached the semi-finals at the WTT Youth Contender Lignano in Italy, while there were quarter-final appearances for Connor Green and Sinan Surensoy.
Piwowar (pictured above) won all three of his group matches without dropping a game in the under-13s and then face compatriot Adam Alibhai in the round of 16, running out winner by a 3-1 (6-11, 11-6, 11-3, 11-4) margin.
Piwowar, seeded third, then beat Italy’s Lorenzo Comini in the quarter-finals, before going out in four games to top seed Chen Kai-Cheng in the last four. His opponent, from Chinese Taipei, went on to win the gold.
Alibhai made it through to the knockouts with two victories out of three and then beat Oriol Martinez of Romania in the round of 32. Surensoy and Oscar Nikolli went out in the groups.
In the under-11s, Surensoy reached the quarter-finals, having won three of his four group matches, losing only to top seed Alexander Malov of Spain. He then faced second seed Louis Fegerl of Austria in the last eight, going out in four games to a player who went on to win the competition.
Green’s quarter-final came in the under-17s, where he went out to sixth seed Stepan Brhel of Czechia, ranked 31 places higher than him at No 82 in the junior world rankings.
Ralph Pattison and Jakub Piwowar also went through to the knockouts and Pattison picked up a great win against Bulgaria’s Yoan Velichkov in the last 32 – against an opponent ranked 129 places above him at 111 in the junior rankings.
His reward was a match against top seed Kazuki Yoshiyama of Japan, and he acquitted himself well before going out 3-0 (11-6, 11-9, 14-12) – Yoshiyama went on to win gold. Piwowar went out in the last 64 to Japan’s Ryuusei Kawakami, ranked 29 places below him at 183 – but his opponent belied that ranking by winning the silver medal.
Max Radiven went out in the group stage of the under-17s, but went furthest of the English players in the under-15s, reaching the last 16.
Having got through the groups, he defeated Switzerland’s Levi Ulrich in the last 64 and then beat Adam Smoter of Poland, the 15th-ranked player in the competition and more than 250 placed ahead of him in the world rankings, in the round of 32.
The last 16 saw him take on Tamito Watanabe of Japan, the top seed, and he was ultimately overpowered after a close opening game. Watanabe went on to win the competition.
Pattison comfortably got out of his group and faced the lower ranked – Chen Kai-Cheng of Chinese Taipei in the last 32. His opponent had already won the under-13 gold and came through 3-1 (11-5, 11-4, 10-12, 11-8). Alibhai, Nikolli and Kacper Piwowar went out in the group stage.
In the under-19s, Green won one of his two matches to reach the last 64, where he was defeated by Vit Kadlec of Czechia, ranked 53 places below him at 166. Jakub Piwowar went out in the group stage.
