Top seed Yat Poon took a double, including the Women’s Singles, at the Wolverhampton Grand Prix, while the Men’s Singles was won by Kevin Brunzell.
Juan Carlos Pomares Gallardo and Grace Looney both won two competitions in the Banded events on Saturday.
Women’s Singles
Yat Poon defeated Jersey’s Hannah Silcock 3-1 (11-5, 11-4, 7-11, 11-8) as she justified top seeding by taking the title.
Poon beat Darcey Taylor of Wales 3-0 (11-7, 11-4, 11-4) in the semi-finals. At the same stage, Silcock secured a 3-1 (11-3, 7-11, 11-9, 11-9) victory over Ewelina Sychta.
Back in the quarters, Silcock was taken to five by Ella Pashley before coming through 3-2 (11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 13-11). Taylor also had a prolonged quarter-final against Lok Yee Lo, which she won 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 5-11, 11-8, 14-12).
Men’s Singles
Kevin Brunzell was a scratch entry on the morning of the event – and he went all the way to take the title with a 3-1 (11-9, 8-11, 14-12, 11-2) victory over top seed Larry Trumpauskas in the final.
There were some cracking matches in the earlier rounds, especially in the top half, where Trumpauskas won the latest of his series against Ralph Pattison 3-1 (13-15, 15-13, 11-5, 11-5) in the semi-finals.
In the quarters, Trumpauskas beat Harri Docherty 3-1 (11-5, 11-6, 4-11, 12-10), while Pattison got past Tianyi Yu 3-2 (8-11, 11-7, 12-10, 3-11, 11-7).
In the bottom half, Brunzell had a titanic battle against Jakub Piwowar in the semi-finals before finally winning it 3-2 (11-13, 7-11, 11-7, 12-10, 12-10).
Piwowar also had a five-setter in the quarters, where he beat second seed Josh Bennett 3-2 (9-11, 11-5, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9). Bennett had in turn been pushed to 17-15, 19-17, 11-5 by Joseph Dennison in the last 16.
Under-21 Women’s Singles
Yat Poon made it two titles on the day as she added the under-21s to the Women’s Singles. Once again, Hannh Silcock was the beat finalist and once again it was 3-1 – the scoreline this time 11-6, 3-11, 11-7, 11-6.
In the semis, two Welsh athletes fell as Poon got past Darcey Taylor 3-0 (8, 6, 6) and Silcock saw off Lara Whitton 11-6, 11-9, 11-3.
Under-21 Men’s Singles
Joseph Dennison saw off Tianyi Yu 3-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-5, 11-6) in the final – but arguably would be more pleased with his semi-final result, having beaten his older brother Adam 3-1 (15-13, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9). He also had an eye-catching win over Larry Trumpauskas in the quarters.
The other semi-final needed five as Yu finally prevailed 3-2 (7-11, 11-5, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9) against Joseph Marlor.
Yu also got taken to five in the quarters, defeating Kevin Brunzell 3-2 (5-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-13, 11-8).
Restricted Singles
Bryan Kwan shook off Umair Mauthoor in a decider, having breezed through the three previous knockout rounds without dropping a game.
Mauthoor changed all that and fought hard before Kwan took it 3-2 (4-11, 11-5, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6).
The semi-finals saw Kwan beat Ethan Walsh 3-0 (11-0, 11-5, 11-8), while Mauthoor overcame Josh bennett 3-1 (12-10, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9).
Veteran Singles
Lorestas Trumpauskas beat Grand Prix stalwart Rory Scott 3-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-5) to take the title.
Both semi-finals were decided in four, Trumpauskas recovering to beat Mircea Neagu 3-1 (5-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-4) and Scott holding off Kevin Nicholls 3-1 (11-6, 11-3, 8-11, 11-9).
Men’s Band 1
Juan Carlos Pomares Gallardo won the title as he recovered from losing the first game to Adam Dennison to bounce back and win 3-1 (4-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-3).
It was also four games in the semi-final as he beat Mircea Neagu 11-7, 11-9, 6-11, 11-5, while Dennison needed all five to get the better or Jakub Piwowar 3-2 (5-11, 11-6, 11-6, 3-11, 11-9).
Back in the quarters, Dennison came from 2-0 down to beat Jakub Kurowski 3-2 (11-13, 4-11, 11-8, 11-5, 11-9), while Gallardo edged past Kevin Brunzell 3-2 (9-11, 11-4, 11-6, 9-11, 12-10).
Women’s Band 1
Ella Pashley had just too much for Tsz Yan Nancy Yeh as she won the final 3-2 (11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 8-11, 11-9).
Second seed Pashley, who surprisingly finished as runner-up in her group to Darcey Taylor of Wales, earlier defeated Xiaoman Ji 3-1 (11-6, 4-11, 14-12, 11-9).
The runner-up beat Taylor 3-2 (11-6, 11-13, 11-8, 7-11, 11-5) in a back and forth semi-final, having beaten Megan Jones 3-2 (12-10, 11-5, 10-12, 12-14, 11-5) in the quarters.
Men’s Band 2
Juan Carlos Pomares Gallardo won the first leg of a double Band triumph as he beat Mircea Neagu 3-0 (11-9, 11-1, 11-8).
The semi-finalists were Joseph Marlor, beaten 2, 3, 8 by Gallardo, and Adam Faulkner, who lost in four to Neagu. Marlor had a good win in the quarter-finals, coming from 2-0 down to beat Ramon Abellan Heredia 3-2 (7-11, 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-7).
Women’s Band 2
Darcey Taylor of Wales overcame Emily Flynn of Ireland 3-2 (10-12, 11-8, 1-11, 11-7, 11-7) to win the title.
Taylor had earlier also needed five in the semi-finals, where she got past Lisa Rinnhofer 3-2 (11-3, 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 11-6).
Flynn’s last-four tie was a more straightforward 3-0 (12-10, 11-2, 11-8) against Anjali Singh.
Men’s Band 3
Tom Irwin beat Pablo Ramirez Rioja 3-1 (11-2, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8) to win the title, but he had nearly gone out in the quarter-finals, where he edged a tight match 3-2 (10-12, 11-7, 9-11, 12-10, 11-8) against Abdul Raqueeb.
Irwin went on to beat Kiarash Shaddel 3-0 (11-5, 11-5, 11-7) in the semi-finals, where Ramirez Rioja recovered from losing the first as he defeated Tommy Gritton 3-1 (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-9).
Women’s Band 3
Grace Looney came out on top thanks to a four-game victory over Sum Monica Chang – the scoreline was 11-3, 11-9, 9-11, 11-6.
Looney came through the semi-finals in four as well, beating Niamh Mason 3-1 (11-7, 11-9, 9-11, 11-9), while Change needed only three against Bhanureka Sabaratnam (6, 10, 5).
Men’s Band 4
Pablo Ramirez Rioja may have been beaten in the Band 3 final by Tom Irwin, but he had earlier ensured he did receive a winner’s cheque as he beat the same opponent in the Band 4 decider.
It was 11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 to Ramriez Rioja, who had to dig deep to come through his semi-final 3-2 (9-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-9, 11-8) against Alex Henry. Back in the last 16, the champion also won in five – 6-11, 11-8, 11-9, 12-14, 11-8) against Nick Gilmour.
Irwin also came from behind in his semi, though it was only a one-game deficit as he saw off Hassan Damji 6-11, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7). In the quarters, Irwin won 3-2 (5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 8-11, 11-6) against Christian Hine.
Women’s Band 4
Grace Looney brought up the first leg of her double Band victory as she won 3-0 (11-7, 11-7, 14-12) in the final, against Niamh Mason.
Mason battled past Aneta Kula 3-2 (9-11, 5-11, 11-9, 12-10, 11-7) in the semi-finals, while Looney beat Sum Monica Chang 3-1 (10-12, 11-2, 11-2, 12-10).
Men’s Band 5
The champion was Shun Hei Chang, who won the final 3-1 (8-11, 11-8, 11-2, 11-8) against Michael Kenyon.
Both the semi-finals were done in four – Kenyon beat Minesh Pitamber 11-8, 11-4, 9-11, 11-7, and it was 8-11, 11-4, 11-6, 11-7 for Change against Carl Thompson.
Men’s Band 6
Oliver Jordan came out on top 3-0 (15-13, 11-7, 11-9) against Jonathan Benge to win the Band 6 final.
Both had to come from behind in the semi-finals – Jordan coming through 3-1 (7-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-6) against Farshad Shaddel and Benge getting past Austin Hibbert 3-2 (11-9, 9-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-5).
