The West Area Schools Team Finals look place on Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 January at Wood Green Academy, Wednesbury, with teams from Worcestershire, Birmingham, Black Country, Staffordshire, Derbyshire and Warwickshire competing for a place in the national semi-finals.
Under-11 Boys
Earlsdon Primary School in Coventry topped the under-11 boys’ event, with three wins, beating Pearl Hyde Primary School and Newcastle-Under-Lyme School 8-0, and their B team 7-1. Earlsdon B finished in second place, with Newcastle-under-Lyme third and Pearl Hyde Primary School fourth.
Under-11 Girls
Congratulations to Newcastle-Under-Lyme School who progressed to the national semi-finals following a walkover against Blackminster Middle School.
Under-13 Boys
Eight teams contested the Under-13 Boys. After the initial round-robin groups, Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School, Birmingham and Friesland School, Derbyshire progressed from group A, and St George’s School, Edgbaston and Lawrence Sherrif School, Rugby from group B.
St George’s finished first with one win and two draws, and will progress to the national semi-finals. Lawrence Sherrif finished second, with a slightly better sets average 16-14 in the match against Friesland School, following both schools securing three draws. Bishop Vesey’s finished fourth.
Blackminster Middle School, St Edmund’s Catholic Academy A, St Edmund’s Catholic Academy B and Churnet View Middle School finished in positions 5-8.
Under-13 Girls
Long Eaton Community School, Derbyshire beat both Sir Graham Balfour, Staffordshire and Blackminster Middle School, Worcestershire 4-3 to progress to the semi-finals.
Credit to Long Eaton who were playing with only two players (due to injury) and to Isabelle Bradly who remained unbeaten in all her singles and doubles matches. Blackminster Middle School finished second having beaten Sir Graham Balfour 5-2.
Under-16 Boys
Tudor Grange Academy, Solihull won the Under 16 Boys with three wins against Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School 7-1, Royal Grammar School, Worcester 7-1, and King Edward Camp Hill School for Boys 8-0, demonstrating their strong team performance. Bishop Vesey’s Grammar School finished second with one win, one draw and one loss. KE Camp Hill finished third and RGS Worcester finished fourth. Warwick School, Clayton Hall Academy, Staffordshire, and Chapel-en-le-Frith, Derbyshire finished 5th to 7th respectively.
Under-16 Girls
Arden Academy, Knowle, Warwickshire secured a 5-2 win against Prince Henry’s High School, Worcestershire. Sisters Hazel and Hailey Lam won two singles each and teamed up to win the doubles. Sheryl Chiu was competing in her first table tennis competition. Elmarie Lourens and Mille Boreham won the matches for Prince Henry’s, with Phoebe Allcock facing the two top players from Arden Academy.
Under-19 Boys
Warwick School comfortably won the under-19 boys, with the loss of just one individual match. Rex Wong, Starry Sheung and Daniel Siu won 6/6 matches, supported by Ambrose Ho winning 5/6. Bromsgrove School finished second, King Edward’s School for Boys, Edgbaston third and Colton Hills Community School in fourth.
Under-19 Girls
Rugby High School won the close encounter against Prince Henry’s High School 3-2. Pippa Thomas won two singles for Prince Henry’s but it was not enough to stop the duo of Anya Sompura and Daya Chima winning one singles each and teaming up for the doubles.
