Abraham Sellado’s run at the European Youth Championships in Malmo was ended by the top seed just one win short of a medal, in the quarter-finals.

Connor Green reached the last 16 of the Junior Boys’ Singles, losing out 13-11 in a decider to the sixth seed, while Adam Alibhai was part of a partnership which reached the Cadet Boys’ Doubles last 16.

Sellado (pictured above), seeded No 24 in the Cadet Boys’ Singles, meaning he started in the last 64, where he had to dig deep to beat 37-ranked Konstantinos Fakaros of Greece 4-3 (12-14, 11-7, 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 12-14, 14-12).

The last 32 saw him over come Marr Closset of Belgium, ranked 33, 4-2 (9-11, 11-7, 9-11, 13-11, 11-4, 11-4), and he followed with a 4-1 (11-7, 9-11, 11-8, 12-10, 13-11) victory over Dario Salcedo of Spain, ranked 35.

The quarter-finals saw him up against top seed Patryk Zyworonek of Poland, and although Sellado fought back from 3-0 down to force a fifth game, he was defeated 4-1 (11-9, 11-2, 11-6, 11-13, 13-11).

Kacper Piwowar, seeded 15th, defeated Mark Usov of Sweden 4-2 (12-14, 11-9, 8-11, 11-6, 13-11, 11-7) in the last 64, but was defeated 4-2 (4-11, 14-12, 13-11, 8-11, 11-3, 11-7) by Germany’s Alexander Szabo, ranked 56, in the last 32.

Adam Alibhai, ranked 69 won through in a tight match against Nikola Miladinovic of Serbia in the round of 128 – the scoreline 4-3 (11-6, 9-11, 12-14, 11-5, 11-8, 8-11, 11-9). He then went out in seven to the No 14-ranked Lenard Szabo of Hungary in the last 64. Max Radiven was knocked out in six in the round of 128 by Adrian Kastl of Austria, ranked three above him at 55.

Green, seeded 21, started in the first round with a routine 4-0 win over Israel’s Uri Almor, and he then defeated Ivan Hencl of Croatia, ranked 37) in six games.

His last-32 clash against 12th seed Gabrielius Camara was a thriller which Green led 3-1, only for his opponent to fight back to level by taking the sixth 14-12. However, Green kept his nerve to win the decider 11-9.

He face sixth seed David Szantosi of Hungary in the last 16 and again it went the distance as Green led 2-0 and 3-2, only to lose out 13-11 in the seventh. The final scoreline was 4-3 (9-11, 9-11, 19-17, 11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 13-11).

Ben Piggott, ranked 99, picked up a terrific victory over the 24th-ranked Isak Alfredsson of Sweden, winning it 4-2 (10-12, 11-8, 11-8, 4-11, 11-9, 12-10). He then faced Martin Froseth of Norway, ranked 38, but could not repeat the feat as he went out 4-2 (11-5, 10-12, 7-11, 11-6, 12-10, 11-7).

Ralph Pattison went out in the first round, the round of 128, to 18th-ranked Croatian Borna Petek, while Larry Trumpauskas had to concede his match because of illness.

Alibhai and Ireland’s Kuang Ze Ni reached the last 16 of the Cadet Boys’ Doubles, where they were beaten in four by the fourth seeds, Aleks Pakula & Jan Mrugala, of Poland.

In the Junior Girls’ Singles, Tianer Yu, ranked 48, reached the last 64 with a 4-0 win over Switzerland’s Isabelle Yeo, but ran into seventh seed Lilou Massart of Belgium in the last 64 and despite a good performance was beaten 4-2 (11-7, 5-11, 12-10, 5-11, 11-5, 17-15).

Ella Pashley and Anna Green both went out in the round of 128 to higher-ranked opponents in five games.

In the Cadet Girls’ Singles, Sienna Jetha took the opening game against seventh seed Nina Skerbinz of Austria but was defeated in five.
