On Sunday, 27th October, Swerve Table Tennis Club hosted a highly successful Coach CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Workshop. The event, led by two of the North Easts top experts, provided an excellent opportunity for coaches to enhance their skills and knowledge, with a focus on vision training, multiball techniques, and service.

Steve Brunskill brought dynamic energy to the session with his engaging presentations on vision training and multiball techniques. Steve’s hands-on approach allowed coaches to see how these principles could be applied practically in their own sessions. His multiball techniques provided insights into high-intensity, repetitive practice designed to hone players’ consistency, accuracy, and fitness.

Graeme Barella’s session focused on the art of serving, which is a crucial yet often overlooked aspect of table tennis. His deep understanding of spin, placement, and disguise in serves gave coaches valuable strategies to take back to their players. Coaches were also able to explore how to teach these complex skills in a clear and structured way, making it easier for players to master this technical area.

In addition, the classroom-based session that I led, took a broader approach by focusing on coaching the whole athlete. This session emphasised the importance of considering the physical, mental, and emotional needs of players in a holistic coaching approach.

The workshop was a great success, with coaches leaving motivated and equipped with new tools to elevate their coaching practice. Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, and the sessions sparked lively discussions and shared learning, reinforcing the importance of continuous professional development in the ever-evolving world of table tennis coaching.

This event marks another step in promoting excellence in table tennis coaching at Swerve Table Tennis Club, and both Steve and Graeme’s contributions were instrumental in making the day impactful.
