Sinan Surensoy reached the Under-13 Boys’ Singles final at the WTT Youth Contender in Berlin, only missing out on the title to the top seed.

Surensoy, seeded fourth, duly won his group with three wins from three to take his place in the quarter-finals. He was joined there by two other English players – Aarav Parihar and Kai Lun Chow.

Parihar, who had also won his group with a 100% record, was defeated 3-2 (6-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9, 11-7) by Vincent Schlotthauer of Luxembourg, but Chow and Surensoy both reached the semi-finals thanks to victories over German opponents.

In the last four, Surensoy (pictured above on the podium) continued his run with a 3-0 win over Schlotthauer, while Chow was defeated, also in three, by top seed Philip Theisen of Luxembourg.

In the final, the higher-ranked Theisen was too strong for Surensoy as he triumphed 3-0 (4, 6, 3).

Lewis Wu and Zihan Lin were also competing in the under-13s and were in the same group as each other, and Theisen. Neither was able to advance from the group, with Wu defeating Lin 3-2 (9-11, 11-4, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7) in the all-English meeting.

Li Hao Chen was in the same group as Chow and, although he won a match, he could not join Chow in the knockouts. Chow won their clash 3-1 (11-9, 9-11, 11-2, 11-3).

In the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, Larry Trumpauskas and Connor Green both reached the knockout rounds but went out in the last 32 to higher-ranked opponents – Trumpauskas to the world No 31 junior, Mykyta Zavada of Ukraine.

In the Under-15s, Adam Alibhai was the only English player to reach the knockouts, where he was defeated 3-1 (11-7, 11-3, 8-11, 11-7) by Yu Yi-Cing of Chinese Taipei, who beat the No 2 seed in the group stage.

Surensoy, Angad Saggu, Parihar, Lin, Wu and Chow all went out in the group stage, though Chow had a good 3-2 (11-2, 11-8, 8-11, 5-11, 11-8) win over Artem Sliuzenko of Ukraine.

In the Under-17s, Trumpauskas and Alibhai reached the last 64, while Saggu went out in the groups.

Trumpauskas was defeated 3-2 (11-8, 9-11, 10-12, 12-10, 11-7) by Lee Hyeonho of South Korea, ranked 56 places below him at 308 on the junior list, who went on to reach the quarter-finals. Alibhai lost in three to Shunto Iwaida of Japan, ranked almost 300 places above him.
