On Sunday 15th September, a highly successful Continuous Professional Development (CPD) event for table tennis coaches was hosted at Carlton Le Willows Academy in Nottingham by area managers Lauren Evans and Chris Bryden. The workshop was attended by local and regional coaches eager to enhance their skills and knowledge. Led by expert tutor Gordon Fearn, the workshop provided a comprehensive learning experience, focusing on key elements essential for modern coaching. The event attracted a wide range of coaches, from grassroots to more experienced individuals, who were all keen to advance their coaching techniques and approaches.

The CPD workshop covered three core areas of table tennis coaching:

Fundamentals of Movement
Gordon demonstrated a variety of games and techniques designed to improve children’s competency on and off the table. These fundamental skills are crucial not just for player development but also for coaches aiming to fine-tune the performance of athletes at all levels.

Multiball Training
One of the most effective ways to train players in specific technical skills, multiball training was a core part of the day’s practical session. Gordon provided insights into how to adjust the pace, spin and difficulty of multiball feeds to target different player weaknesses and strengths, making this an invaluable learning session for all participants.

Classroom Session on Funding
The workshop also included a classroom-based session, where participants learned about the various programmes that Table Tennis England offer and also some top tips for securing funding for their clubs and development projects. Chris and I outlined the steps coaches and clubs can take to apply for grants – this session was particularly well-received, as many coaches found it beneficial to understand how to secure resources to enhance their coaching programmes and facilities.

Events like this CPD workshop play a pivotal role in building and strengthening the table tennis coaching community. By bringing coaches together in an interactive learning environment, the workshop facilitated networking and knowledge-sharing, encouraging collaboration among local clubs and coaches.

Overall, the CPD event at Carlton Le Willows Academy was a great success, thanks to Gordon’s expert guidance and the enthusiasm of the participating coaches. By focusing on the fundamentals of movement, multiball techniques, and practical information on funding, the workshop equipped coaches with the tools they need to help players improve their game and ensure that their clubs continue to grow and thrive.
