On Sunday, December 1st, The Walker Activity Dome in Newcastle buzzed with energy as 11 enthusiastic junior table tennis players participated in a dynamic coaching day organised by the North East Local Organising Group. Led by coaches Graeme Barella from NETT and Clare Flynn, the session ran from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM and focused on enhancing footwork.

The day kicked off with a warm-up to prime the players for a series of structured drills designed to improve agility, positioning, and consistency around the table. With a mix of multiball exercises, which tested reflexes and coordination, and focused practice on movement patterns, the players were put through their paces.

Graeme and Clare offered personalised tips and demonstrations, ensuring that players of all levels could refine their techniques. The coaches emphasised the importance of balance and positioning to allow players to stay in control during fast-paced rallies. The group also engaged in match play, where they could put their skills to the test in a competitive setting, receiving feedback to fine-tune their performance.

Adding an exciting twist to the day, I delivered a short fitness session for both the players, with even coach Graeme joining in! This session emphasised the importance of physical conditioning in table tennis, helping participants understand how fitness contributes to overall performance on the table.

The event was not only an opportunity for skill development but also a chance to build togetherness among young players and connect with dedicated coaches. Clare and Graeme’s expertise and enthusiasm created a positive and encouraging atmosphere, leaving the players motivated and eager.

The coaching day at The Walker Activity Dome demonstrated the value of grassroots initiatives in nurturing young talent and fostering a love for the sport in the North East.
