Ho (WR 186) overcame Shuohan Men of the Netherlands, ranked around 300 places below her, edging a tight first game and then having something in hand for the rest of the contest as it finished 3-0 (14-12, 11-5, 11-7).

Ho’s reward in the last 64 is to face seventh seed Natalia Bajor of Poland at 2.20pm UK time on Thursday on Table 4.

Walker always held Israel’s Itay Avivi at arm’s length in his preliminary round tie, the only minor inconvenience when he trailed the third game 10-9. He won the next three points to complete a 3-0 (7, 6, 10) victory to clinch his last-64 place. He will face Yang Wang of Slovakia tomorrow. The match is on Table 6 at 7.10pm UK time.

Liam Pitchford is seeded 15 and he enters the competition at the same stage, playing Robert Gardos of the host nation on Table 1 at 6.20pm.

Green was unable to join Walker in the next round although, from a position of 0-2 and 4-7, he almost turned it around against world No 95 Benedek Olah of Finland. He won the third and fourth 11-9 and was well poised at 8-8 in the decider.

Olah’s extra experience, making sure he won his two service points to bring up two match points – he took the first – was ultimately the difference, but Green will take a lot from defeat against a player ranked more than 300 places above him.

Jarvis also went to five against Ioannis Sgouropoulos of Greece, ranked just four places above him at 201 in the world.

Twice Jarvis came from a game down to level – including turning around an 8-10 deficit in the second – but Sgouropoulos kept himself in front in the decider.

Jarvis, who appeared in some discomfort near the end – perhaps a legacy of his recent ankle injury – saved two match points, but his opponent won it with an edge on this third.

Walker, Green and Ho all progressed to the preliminary round after their final group matches earlier today, while Jarvis also made it through as group runner-up having finished his matches yesterday.

Ho was first in action, against Sara Tokic of Slovenia and it went to five as Tokic fought to stay in the competition. Ho saved five game points in the first but lost it 13-11, but she twice fought back from a game down to level.

The decider saw Ho come from 4-1 down at her timeout to lead 6-5, but four points in a row for Tokic saw her take a big step towards winning the game 11-7.

That result left Ho, Tokic and Alexendra Chiriacova of Moldova all with two victories – but Ho topped the group on countback, ahead of Chiriacova, setting up the tie with Men.

Walker’s match against Rune Schultz of Greenland did not unduly tax him as he won in three one-sided games to finish the group stage with a perfect record of three wins.

In the last 32 of the Mixed Doubles, 16th seeds Liam Pitchford & Anna Hursey of Wales defeated Matteo Mutti & Debora Vivarelli of Italy in four games to move into the last 16.

The third game was pivotal, the British pair saving a game point before claiming it 12-10 and powering out to a 9-3 lead in the fourth, which they took 11-7 to complete victory.

Pitchford & Hursey next face sixth seeds Eduard Ionescu & Elizabeta Samara of Romania, at 8.30am UK time on Thursday, on Table 4.

Walker & Ho are out, however, eliminated by the ninth seeds Samuel Arpas & Barbora Balazova of Slovakia, who pulled away in the third and fourth games after two tight opening games had been shared.

This afternoon, two doubles pairs including English players booked their places in the main draw.

Ho & Debora Vivarelli of Italy defeated Danish pair Jocefina Haagensen & Maja Hansen in four to get into the last 32 of the Women’s Doubles, where they will face Serbia’s Izabela Lupulesku & Sabina Surjan, the 12th seeds, tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Green & Hakan Isik of Turkey won in three over Pert Marten Lehtlaan & Madis Moos of Estonia to reach the same stage of the Men’s Doubles. They will face 11th seeds Tomislav Pucar of Croatia and Darko Jorgic of Slovenia tomorrow.

Twelfth seeds Pitchford & Walker enter the competition at the same stage and will face Konstantinos Angelakis of Greece & Slovakia’s Yang Wang tomorrow.
