Ella Pashley, Abraham Sellado and Hannah Saunders all won two singles titles at a busy Cleveland Junior 4 Star played at Thornaby Pavilion event over the weekend, with Ormesby players also among the victors.

Junior Events

Ormesby players dominated the Junior Thomas Rayner (Durham) winning the boys’ singles with victory over Ben Piggott (Cleveland) and Rebecca Savage (Durham) winning the girls’ singles, beating Ella Pashley (Cleveland).

The finalists combined to win both the junior boys’ and junior girls’ team events.

Rayner, who was only the sixth seed came through to the final with wins against James Hamblett (Hertfordshire) in the quarters and Felix Thomis (Berkshire) by three games to one in the semi.

In the final, Rayner excelled to beat Piggott. The first three games were very close with the fourth a victory to Rayner by 11-5. 

Top seed Piggott reached the final with a 3-1 victory over Oliver Cornish (Devonshire) in the semi-finals.

In the girls’ singles final, Savage recovered from 2-0 down to beat Pashley 11-4 in the fifth.  Second seed Savage beat Eve Witterick (Cleveland) by 3-0 in the semi-finals while Pashley beat Niamh Scarborough (Cheshire) by the same score.

In the junior girls’ team event, Ormesby’s Savage and Pashley beat Northern Girls, Sophie Ackred (Cumbria) and Freya Williams (Durham), 3-0.

Ormesby junior boys’ team beat the Urban team of James Hamblett and Jake Haygarth by 3-0 in the final.

Under-17 events

Top seed James Hamblett won the U17 boy’s singles with a win against Ben Dunkley (Bedfordshire) 11-4 in the fifth in the semi-final and Joseph Dennison (Lancashire) by 3-1 in a tight final. 

Dennison overcame his brother Adam by 11-9 in the fifth to reach the final. Hamblett had a close match with Nathan Hogg (Scotland) that went to five games in the quarter-final.

In the U17 girls, Ella Pashley was a comfortable winner, beating Mauli Shah (Middlesex) in the semi-finals and Mabel Shute (Essex) in the final, both by 3-0.

Cadet events

The cadet boys’ singles was won by the top seed Abraham Sellado (Yorkshire), who beat Max Radiven (Middlesex) in straight games in the final. Sellado won comfortably in the semi-finals against the seventh seed Fernando Frandes (Middlesex), while second seed Radiven beat Rex Wong (Warwickshire) by 3-1.

The cadet girls’ singles final was won by Ella Pashley who beat Mia Longman (Yorkshire) in the semis and Hannah Saunders (Cambridgeshire), both in straight games, in the final.

The cadet boys’ team event winners were Woodford Wells, Adam Alibhai and Rex Wong, who beat Halifax’s Abraham Sellado and Zac Greenhough by 3-1 in the final. Wong and Alibhai won one set each and combined to win the doubles.

The cadet girls’ team final went the full distance as Wensum’s Mia Longman (Yorkshire) and Eva Eccles (Norfolk) beat London Academy, Lianna Shilanai Tousi and Alisha Dutta (Middlesex), 3-2.  Eccles was the star player for Wensum winning both her singles that included a win against Alisha Dutta at 11-9 in the fifth with a score poised at 2-2.

Under-13 events

The U13 boys’ singles was won by Abraham Sellado (Yorkshire), who added the win to his cadet boys’ singles victory, beating Joe Mulhern (Scotland) by 3-1 in the final. Sellado had a comfortable win in the semi-finals against Lewis Wu (Cambridgeshire) while Mulhern upset the seeding by beating Adam Alibhai (Essex) 11-3 in the fifth.

The U13 girls’ singles was won by Hannah Saunders, beating Amber Lemmon (Cambridgeshire) by three straight games in the final.

Under-11 events

The U11 boys’ singles was won by Zihan Lin (Cambridgeshire), who beat Lewis Wu (Cambridgeshire) 3-1 in the final.

The U11 girls’ singles final was a repeat of the U13 girls’ singles, with Hannah Saunders beating Amber Lemmon.

Nine-year-old Hannah Saunders (Archway Peterborough) made a big impact on the tournament, winning both the U13 and U11 girls singles. In addition, Hannah reached the final of the cadet girls’ singles before losing to Ella Pashley after some close games.
