Connor Green, Abraham Sellado and Dimitar Dimitrov all reached the quarter-final stage at the WTT Youth Contender Linz in Austria, but all missed out on a medal.
Green, ranked No 50 on the junior world list, was second seed in the Under-19 Boys’ Singles, and after making it safely through the groups and early rounds, had a tough last-16 clash, beating Thomas Laroche of France 12-10 in the fifth.
His quarter-final against Rafael Kong of Portugal also went the distance, Kong (WR 169) winning 3-2 (11-9, 11-6, 5-11, 8-11, 11-8).
Ralph Pattison, Joseph Hunter and Rohan Dani all reached the last 32, Dani going out in a decider to the eventual runner-up, Stephan Brhel of Czechia, and the others losing to higher-ranked players.
Sellado, the top seed in the Under-15 Boys’ Singles, had to come from 2-0 down to beat Nikola Miladinovic of Serbia in the groups, but then made it smoothly into the quarter-finals, where he was beaten 3-1 (11-3, 7-11, 11-8, 11-8) by Samuel Kuhl of Germany, ranked 287 on the junior list, 87 places below Sellado.
Second seed Kacper Piwowar surprisingly did not make it out of his group, while Dimitrov reached the last 32.
In the Under-13 Boys, Dimitrov got through his group and a last-16 clash to set up a quarter-final against top seed Ladimir Mayorov of Spain, but was beaten in three as Mayorov went on to win the competition.
Ella Pashley, currently unranked, went toe-to-toe with the second seed Karolina Holda of Poland in the last 32 of the Under-19 Girls’ Singles.
The world No 22 finally won 16-14 in the fifth – she went on to reach the semi-finals.
Sophie Earley, ranked at No 158 on the junior list, went out at the same stage, losing to world No 93 Lisa Wang of Germany.
Pashley won one of her three group matches in the Under-17 Girls, but that was not enough to reach the knockouts.
In the Under-17s Boys, Sellado, ranked No 200 on the Junior list, held a 2-0 lead over Robert Istrate of Romania in their last-16 clash, but saw his opponent, ranked at 122, win the third 13-11 and then complete his comeback. Istrate went on to reach the semi-finals.
Sellado had a comeback of his own in the last 32, winning the last two games 11-9 to beat Adrian Kastl of Austria. Rohan Dani reached the last 32, losing out to the unranked German Alexander Sahakiants.
Pattison and Piwowar went out in deciding games in the last 64 – Piwowar losing 14-12 in the decider to Jakub Holobcik of Slovakia, ranked 88 places above him at No 113. Pattison lost to lower-ranked Wojciech Szymczak of Poland.
In the Under-15 Mixed Doubles, Sellado & Lizett Fazekas of Hungary beat the top seeds during a run to the quarter-finals.
They sunk Tien Nghia Phong & Amelie Jia of Germany 3-2 (12-10, 9-11, 11-3, 7-11, 11-7) in the round of 32, and then beat an Austrian pair in three in the last 16. Their run ended in the quarter-finals as they lost 3-2 (11-7, 11-7, 3-11, 7-11, 11-4) to another German pair, Jonas Rinderer & Anna Walter.
Dimitrov, competing with Czechia’s Adela Brhelova, won their last 64 match and then impressed with an 18-16 in-the-fifth win over higher-ranked Lowis Vogler & Michelle Wu of Switzerland.
They were beaten in the last 16 by third seeds Samuel Kuhl & Eva Gao of Germany in four close games.
Piwowar & Simona Holubova of Czechia won their first match against a higher-ranked Romanian pair, but then went out in the last 32 to another higher-ranked pair from the same country.
In the Under-19 Mixed, Hunter & Wu Ying-syuan of Chinese Taipei lost to the third seeds Tiago Abiodun & Julia Leal of Portugal in the last 16, though pushed them to a deciding game. They earlier edged through a tight four-game match against higher-ranked pair Ivan Hencl (CRO) & Maria Berzosa (ESP).
Pattison & Pashley went out in a decider to Ukrainian seventh seeds, Yehor Borshchevskyi & Veronika Vasylenko in the first round.
