Sam Walker & Tin-Tin Ho won their opening Mixed Doubles match at the WTT Contender Doha, but both are out of the singles.

It was a switchback ride for the English pair against Samuel Kulczycki & Katarzyna Wegrzyn of Poland, but they prevailed in five, having twice seen leads pegged back.

They took a crucial third 13-11, having led 9-5 and then trailed 10-9, and eventually sealed it in the fifth with a run of seven points from 4-3 up.

They next face second seeds Sathiyan Gnanasekaran & Manika Batra of India on Wednesday at 7am UK time – watch on the WTT YouTube channel (table 4).

Walker came in at the second qualifying round stage of the Men’s Singles and defeated Mohammed Abdulwahhab of the host nation with no real alarms.

His opponent in the third qualifying round was world No 58 Joao Geraldo of Portugal and Walker lost in three straight.

He led the first 8-6 but saw his left-handed opponent reel off five in a row and then keep his momentum going as he took a 9-0 lead in the second on the way to winning it 11-2.

Walker battled hard in a third game punctuated by several lengthy rallies, and he saved a match point at 8-10, before Geraldo took his second chance.

Meanwhile, Ho was eliminated by Germany’s Chantal Mantz, ranked 35 places above her at No 120, in the first qualifying round.

As well as the Mixed, Ho still has the Women’s Doubles, alongside Austria’s Karoline Mischek, to look forward to. They face Shin Yubin & Jeon Jihee of South Korea at 3.35pm on Wednesday on table 4.
