Green had England’s first success of the tournament as she held her nerve to defeat world No 446 Angela Rodriguez.

Making her debut at Feeder level, Green (pictured above) showed no sign of nerves as she took the first 11-8. Her Spanish opponent hit back to take the second, but Green again moved in front, despite having to use her timeout in the third as Rodriguez came back from 8-1 to 8-5 down.

The fourth was tight and at 9-8 to Rodriguez – who had been 7-5 down – it looks as if a decider was in the offing.

However, Green continued to play positively and won the next three points to complete victory by a 3-1 (11-8, 4-11, 11-6, 11-9) margin.

She faced another Spanish opponent, world No 334 Elivra Rad, in the second qualifying round and may have feared the worst when Rad took the first seven points of the match.

Although that game was effectively written off, Green gave as good as she got for the remainder of the match, fighting back from 8-4 down to 8-8 in the second and leading for most of the third.

She was still in it at 9-9 but ultimately Rad had a bit too much nous and came through to book her place in the main draw – though there are plenty of positives for Green to take from her Feeder debut.

Elsewhere in the Women’s Singles, the brutal nature of sport was illustrated as Sienna Jetha saw three match points slip by as she was beaten in the first qualifying round.

Having taken a 2-0 lead, the young Englishwoman came back from 5-0 down in the third to lead Italy’s Miriam Carnovale 10-7 and stand on the threshold of a big win over an opponent ranked No 444 in the world.

However, Carnovale reeled off five points in a row, with Jetha having used her timeout to get her over the line in the second, during which she had seen a 10-6 lead eroded back to 10-9.

After her fine comeback in the third, Carnovale seemed to grow in stature and won games four and five with relative ease to seal a 3-2 (7-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-5, 11-3) victory.

Mari Baldwin also faced Italian opposition in Nicole Arlia (WR 358) and struggled to get a foothold in the match early on. Finding herself 2-0 down, she fought back to take the third in fine style but could not continue the comeback and was beaten 3-1 (11-6, 11-5, 5-11, 11-6).

In the all-England clash between Yat Poon and Ella Pashley, Poon took a 2-0 lead but saw Pashley hit back in the third.

Pashley led the fourth 10-9 but could not convert the point to take it to a decider as Poon won the next three points to see out a 3-1 (11-8, 11-2, 5-11, 12-10) victory.

Poon next faced Jana Riera of Spain, who at WR 297 is 174 places above her in the world rankings. It turned into a classic encounter in which both missed match points before Riera prevailed.

Having won the first 11-9, Poon was 2-1 down and facing elimination at 10-9 and 11-10 down in the fourth. However, she saved both match points and took it to a decider.

Poon hit the front from 2-2 in the fifth and Riera earned a yellow card for bashing the table with her bat as she went 4-2 down.

Poon remained in front all the way up to 10-8, but as the match ended in a welter of lengthy high-speed, rallies, Riera clawed back the two match points and then took her chance to seal the decider 12-10.

In the Men’s Singles first qualifying round, Abraham Sellado always faced a tall order against Germany’s Benno Oehme, the second highest-ranked player in qualifying at No 273.

But the 15-year-old, making his debut at this level, grew into the game and scored an ever increasing number of points per game, and save a match point, before going out in three (11-3, 11-7, 11-9).

Sienna Jetha & Ella Pashley

In the Women’s Doubles qualifying round, Pashley & Jetha were unable to join the rest of the GB contingent in the main draw, as they went down in four games to Ainhoa Cristobal & Eugenia Sastre of Spain.
